What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Fighting games are a specific genre. The controls must be tight, the animations must be perfect to the millisecond, the balance must be ideal, as well as the difficulty tiers. As I'm making this game mostly alone and with a limited budget, I want You - the Players - to be involved in testing and improving the game.

Feedback and suggestions from the core audience are essential for this game's final form. As an independent developer, I don't have any deadlines or limitations making Hellish Quart, so I believe that early involvement of the Players will only be beneficial.

Revenue from Early Access sales allows for making more and better quality content, such as an original soundtrack, professional voiceovers, hiring HEMA fencers for more mocap, etc.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The game is planned to be in Early Access for approximately two years, but this can change either way, depending on Player feedback.

Edit: Currently the scope of the game has become larger than what was planned at the Early Access release. We already got more gameplay modes, more combat features and more (than the initially planned 12) characters/fighting styles are in the works. It is very likely that we will spend more than 2 years making this game. This doesn't mean we work slower - we will just make more content.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of the game is planned to include:

  • 12 fighting styles and even more characters [EDIT: this goal has been reached; we extended the number of planned fighters to 24]
  • 12 arenas [EDIT: goal reached; currently there are 17 and more coming]
  • original soundtrack [19 tracks are already in the game!]
  • 6 AI modes
  • cinematic story mode (full cutscenes)
  • different clothes for characters to choose from
  • Modern HEMA sparring mode [EDIT: goal reached]
  • Sparring mode with training weapons [EDIT: goal reached]

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Currently, the game includes:

  • 12 playable characters [EDIT: but more coming]
  • 17 arenas
  • Story cinematic teaser (a test cutscene)
  • 19 original music tracks (more coming)
  • Arcade mode with a boss fight, vs. AI mode, survival mode, sparring mode, history buff mode, and local player vs. player mode (use Steam Remote Play Together to play online)
  • Many controllers support (including fight sticks) and fully rebindable controls
  • Options to adjust the active ragdolls' parameters, slomo, stamina, damage, no blood, etc.

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We want the price to fit the state of the Early Access and represent the amount of mechanics and content that is in the game at the moment. We may want to raise the price in the future when out of Early Access, to best fit the final product.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“After every update, everyone is welcome to comment and leave their feedback and suggestions on the game's forum. Player suggestions and concerns will be the foundation of the changes in gameplay, features, and overall shape of the game.”

About This Game

Hellish Quart is a physics-based sword fighting game set in 17th century Poland. With motion-captured fencing techniques and four gamepad buttons representing four attack angles, you'll need to use timing, technique, and speed to defeat your opponents. Choose from a variety of warriors and fight in arcade mode, quick fights, survival mode, or local multiplayer. If you want to hone your sword fighting skills, you can spar with wooden weapons or train in modern HEMA gear. And for the ultimate experience, Hellish Quart also offers an optional VR mode.

Please note that the game is still in development and only supports local multiplayer.
In Early Access, the game's text and dialogues are translated to non-English languages by an automatic system. The translations may be imprecise at this stage, but will be later corrected by hand.

  • physical Sword Fighting using Active Ragdolls
  • super realistic, motion captured fencing animations
  • challenging boss fight
  • optional VR mode

Hellish Quart utilizes active ragdolls and real-time physics to get you the ultimate fencing experience. You can attack from four different angles using the four gamepad buttons. Different button combinations enable special attacks and combos. When you are not attacking, your character automatically assumes a defensive stance, blocking your opponent's attacks using the autoguard feature. Proper timing, technique, speed, measure, and wits are all crucial to winning, just like in real-world fencing.

The game is set in the historical 17th-century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the character models are based on 3D-scanned reconstructed clothes from that period. The single-player campaign, once completed, will be firmly rooted in the reality of life in the region. You will duel against Zaporozhian Cossacks, Polish Hussars, Tatars, Turkish Janissaries, Swedish Reiters, French Musketeers, and more.
